Success is just round the corner – DON’T QUIT!
For over 10 years Mr. Alfred D’Souza worked in various shipping firms working 14 hours per day. As he observed those companies prospering with his efforts; he thought to himself – why can’t I give time to myself and work as hard? So for 15 years, he worked 15-16 hours per day in his own business, until it stabilized.
How did he handle the ups and downs in his business? There are ups and downs in any business. When there is no business coming in, no cash flows and loans and expenses having to be paid; you question yourself – was it the right decision to get into business? In these dark moments, he feels often we have done 90-95% of the work. We just need to have self-belief and keep moving. It is however at this point that many quit, that’s a tragedy. For success you need to have honesty and sincerity – and be kind to your employees. Success is just round the corner; DON’T QUIT.
Mr Alfred D’Souza is married and has two sons. Both of them work with him in his business – the elder son on a part-time basis and the younger one, full-time. Business has given growth and satisfaction to him and his family.
Today’s youth are techno-savvy and because of globalization are spending up to 14 hours using technology: mobile phones, internet, laptops etc. This leaves hardly any time for relaxation. As a community, we value Sunday Mass and popular devotions. We get valuable inputs on these occasions; however we don’t take this to the world outside. Neither do we practice these messages. We need to open up the world. Don’t live just for yourself. Many of the Small Christian Communities suffer from low participation. It is big wonderful world. Don’t limit yourself!
What in your view are the barriers for the Christian community getting into business?
We don’t want to take a risk in life; seeking security instead. We look at only one angle – “secured job”. We need to become risk-oriented. After all God helps those who helps themselves. Even Jesus took risk, he asserts. In fact, every moment he took risk. The person we believe in was risk-oriented. So trust in Him and take risk!
With his sons taking care of his business and having achieved material success; Mr. Alfred D’Souza is now contributing with his time and skills as a Deacon in the Catholic Church.
